What's Ricki Lake?

I always listen to music at work, and recently I've been tuned to Pandora's 90s Pop Hits and Summertime Hits constantly.  Listening to the lyrics, I really started thinking about how kids today definitely do not hear these songs the same way we do.  I found 5 perfect examples of songs with pop culture references that have post Y2K babies scratching their heads:

1. The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For a White Guy): "At least you know you can always go on Ricki Lake." Ricki Lake ended 10 years ago.

2. Will Smith - Gettin' Jiggy Wit It: "Ill-way the an-may on the ance-day oor-flay." Do kids today have any idea what Pig Latin is?

3. Blink 182 - All The Small Things: Do they get that the video is a spoof of BSB's I Want It That Way video?  Even more than that, do they even know what BSB stands for?!

4. New Radicals - You Get What You Give: Just listen to the entire 4th verse...

5. Payphone - Maroon 5: DO THEY EVEN KNOW WHAT A PAYPHONE IS?!?

There have to be more of these, too, as well as songs our parents listen to that we just don't get!  Can you think of any??

I had not ever thought of it in those terms - but you are absolutely right! It reminds me of the kids not knowing what a Walkman is once handed one. I love listening to the 90s on my drive to work (Sirius has a great station!)

Here's the reactions to the Walkman on YouTube, you'll get a kick out of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk_vV-JRZ6E
