Weekend-y Things

This was the first weekend in a long time that Mike and I didn't have any plans.  It was just what we needed.  We did a lot of cooking (this, this, and these), golf-watching, and tanning.  I drove all of two times this weekend: once to golf on Friday and a second time for brunch with JillianCait, and Jessica at Five Loaves downtown.

Sitting by the pool all weekend, I finally had the opportunity to finish my most recent Blogging for Books read, Ruby.  To be honest, it took me a long time to get through this book.  I usually really enjoy books that take place in this timeframe, the mid-twentieth century, but this book was just so brutally honest and haunting that it took a while to immerse myself in the story.  The two main characters, Ephram and Ruby meet as young children, but their lives take very different paths, both lined with their share of despair.  The book follows Ruby's return to her East Texas hometown after living in New York City.  Her sanity unravels as she faces the secrets of her past, but Ephram never gives up on her, proving the healing power of love.  Ruby is definitely a valuable but demanding read; prepare yourself to spend some quality time with the book.

I'm reading Ruby via Blogging for Books right now as well. Totally agree. It is difficult to pick up each time because it is so heavy. I'm hoping to get through it by the end of next weekend. Glad you had a relaxing weekend!!

Sounds wonderful and relaxing! I have a hard time getting through heavy books too, sometimes I would just rather read something light and fun!
